Korea has been seeking a change into a high value added industry from a labor intensive industry. Securing international competitiveness in service sectors, including the logistics sector has also been promoted as a national strategy. We are achieving visible results in expanding transportation, logistics infrastructure and softening of regulations, but still lack in the software aspects such as logistics informatization and securing of more logistics experts. In particular, fostering logistics experts with international competitiveness is an important factor in deciding regional centers for multinational corporations. So, since we aim to become the business center of Northeast Asia, fostering competent logistics experts is the task of utmost priority.
For the last 100 years, Incheon has made great contributions in our international trading as the gateway to the capital region. Now Incheon has the Incheon International Airport, and is designated as a free economic zone, and has a chance to become a truly realize the vision of becoming the logistics and business center in the Northeast Asia. Incheon is truly surfacing as the center for industry clusters, IT and logistics centers, which are the core to building the hub nation of the Northeast Asian economy.
The government has suggested a policy to foster high level experts who will be active in international logistics activities as one of 7 major tasks in the roadmap towards becoming the hub of Northeast Asian logistics. The University of Incheon prepared for the nation's call and applied for a logistics specialized university at the Ministry of Education in 2003. The importance was recognized and the university was recognized, and given financial support. On top of this, the establishment of the Graduate School of Logistics in Northeast Asia was approved. So from 2004, the first ever graduate school specializing in logistics in Korea started to be operated, and took on the important role of fostering logistics experts of international standards.
